        The cross  is an  unmarked example, and retains the vast majority of its original black paint. The frame is in lovely un-polished condition, as is the suspension loop and ring. The ribbon is the really unusual thing about this Iron Cross, having been fashioned into a very symmetrical bow, and the central piece of ribbon has been hand sewn to complete the bow. It can be worn with the integral safety pin, which is marked AIDL

 

         There are only 29 recorded cases of iron crosses being awarded to women. There are also photos showing the wives and mothers of fallen soldiers wearing their awards. There is sadly no way to tell which it is.
